Date: 2018-12-13 02:55 am (UTC)Interests are the things in your profile that you can use to find other journals or communities. When you search an interest, you get a list of every other journal or community that lists that interest, starting with the most recently updated one. They don't get organized or categorized in anyway, other than being alphabetized on your profile. I ended up here after searching some interests :P
Tags are the things on your posts. They also get alphabetized, both on the specific post and on the /tags page that lists all of the tags you've used. You can make them hierarchical like "comics: marvel: spider-gwen" and "comics: indie", and they'll show up on your /tags page all nice and indented like
* comics
* marvel
* spider-gwen
* indie
edit: however, tags (as opposed to interests) don't get linked to anyone else. they're specific to the journal/community, for organization rather than outreach.

Date: 2018-12-13 12:15 pm (UTC)Looking at a giant list of interests and trying to parse if the other person has similar interests seems daunting, so I'll have to see if people trend towards specializing in a set of interests or just having a list of several dozen things they like and follow.
Thanks again for your help! Please don't push off on my account!
